Caring for a Sassy Senior

When we first met Jezabel at the Weber County Animal Shelter, her name was Aunt Ester, and she was every bit the street cat—tough, independent, and full of sass. Her raspy meow made us think of an aunt from New York who chased kids off her porch and loved hot dogs with mustard. Despite her gruff exterior, we instantly fell in love and knew she needed us.

Bringing Jezabel into our care, we understood the challenges of caring for a senior cat. At 12 years old, she still had the potential for many more years of life, but senior cats face a difficult reality—many families are hesitant to adopt them due to the costs of health care. Unfortunately, during her first checkup, we discovered that Jezabel was in the advanced stages of kidney failure.

Kidney failure in cats is a painful and progressive illness with limited treatment options. Jezabel needed constant attention, from special diet food to rounds of antibiotics and supplements. Some days, she was her sassy, playful self, but others required emergency vet visits. Her care was extensive and costly, but we were committed to ensuring she had the best quality of life possible.
